NOW PUTTING TOGETHER THE PIECES OF THE ACCIDENT "PUZZLE" HAS GONE HIGH TECH
The Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) System downloads both pre and post crash data from the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) which is part of the vehicle's airbag system. It also records information on "near-deployment" events such as impacts that are not severe enough to deploy the airbag(s). These events are common in "low speed" crashes, which often result in litigation for soft tissue injuries.
Some of the data that can be retrieved include:
- Vehicle's speed five seconds prior to impact
- Brake Status
- Throttle Position
- Engine RPM
- Passenger's airbag enabled or disabled state
- State of driver's seat belt switch
